Could Talking on your Phone Increase your Car Insurance?

You are probably already aware that talking on your mobile phone whilst you are driving your car is illegal and, if caught, you could be subject to a range of legal action. This means you should never use your phone in the car – but did you know that if you do, it could also have an impact on your ability to get cheap car insurance?

This is because, if you get caught talking on the phone while you are driving, it will show up on your driving record. This will usually take the form of 3 penalty points and a fixed fine, but if your use of the phone led to an accident you could also be prosecuted for dangerous driving, which is much more serious.

When you apply for car insurance, you have to give details about your driving history – including any driving convictions and points on your license. This means that if you have been caught driving on the phone and have got license points as a result, you need to tell prospective car insurance companies about it.

As drivers who have got points on their license are considered higher risk – after all, if they already have one driving incident to their name, how do the insurers know it won’t happen again? – they will typically be asked to pay more for their insurance. This can often be quite a significant sum of money, especially if you drive a car that already costs quite a lot to insure.

Therefore, as well the fact you shouldn’t use your phone while you are driving because it is illegal, it could also have serious implications for the cost of your car insurance. This could affect you for years to come, so if you absolutely must take a phone call in the car, wait until you are able to pull over and stop safely and answer the phone from a secure location.
